New WIP shots from my workbench. This time I can show you finished airbrush work on Saburo Sakai’s A6M2 Zero. This machine operated from a small dirty airfield on a New Guinea. Non paved runway and a lot of tropical rainy days left the visible dirty marks on the aircraft.

Paints:
Basic camo: AK RC303 (IJN J3 Amber Grey) + RC004 (White) – ratio 1:1
Shadows for camo: RC303 + RC302 (Hai-Iro) + RC004 – ratio 3:1:2
Control surfaces: RC303 + RC302 + RC222 – ratio 1:1:3
Hinomaru: MRP-411 (Hinomaru red) + MRP-396 (Tan) + MRP-122 (RAF Yellow) – ratio 14:3:3
Lights for Hinomaru: ratio 5:2:2
White rudder band: MRP-004 (White) +MRP- 135 (Insignia White) – ratio 1:1
Yellow circular lid: MRP-122 (RAF Yellow) toned slightly with MRP-396 (Tan)
Black tail number: MRP-137 Jet Black
Blue band on the fuselage: AK RC017 Pale Blue
Lights for blue band: AK RC 239 Air Superiority Blue
Weathering of wing roots and central belly area: TAMIYA XF-1 Black + XF-10 (Flat Brown) – ratio 3:2 heavily diluted with IPA
Fuel stains: XF-1 + XF-10 – ratio 3:1 heavily diluted with IPA
Dirty ground stains around tail wheel and near main gear legs: TAMIYA XF-59 (Desert Yellow) + XF-64 (Red Brown)

Note: The best reference photo of the A6M2 Zero with blue band I managed to find can be seen in EDUARD Info 10/2022 p.23 in the article by Ed DeKiep – see rather blurry yet colour photo no.11. Based on the photo, it is clear that the blue band doesn’t stretch all over the bottom part of the fuselage.

No varnish nor decals nor oil paints applied yet. All marking was airbrushed with the help of an excellent custom masks from omask.cz and control surfaces were shadowed via masks from deaddesignmodels.com. Masks for circular lids on the front part of the fuselage and on the upper wings were cut with the help of DISPIAE circular cutter.

Poznámka: Nejlepší podklad na vzhled šikmého modrého pruhu na Zerech z oblasti Nové Guinei, který se mi podařilo dohledat, je v článku Ed DeKiepa publikovaného v EDUARD Info 10/22 str.29. Jedná se především o snímek č.11, který je sice značně neostrý, ale zato barevný. Můžeme si tak udělat přibližnou představu o odstínu použité modré a především je zde vidět, že pruh neobepínal trum kolem dokola, ale ve spodní části byl přerušen.

Na modelu nebyly dosud aplikován lak ani obtisky ani žádné olejové barvy. Vše je zatím pouze výsledek práce se stříkací pistolí. Masky označení mi vyřezal Ondra s OMASK.cz a ovládací plochy jsem vystínoval pomocí masek od DeadDesignModels.com. Na zamaskování šesti kruhových víček na přední části trupu a křídlech jsem použil vlastní masky vyřezané na kruhové řezačce od DISPIAE.
